Barnyard Horse Party
Barnyard horse birthday cakes, menu, activities and favors
Pony parties are down home good fun! With an oink-oink here, and a neigh-neigh
there, Old MacDonald is sure to be impressed with your creativity when you throw an
old fashioned barnyard bash pony party. You don't even need a real pony to throw off
this horse themed party, you can host a picnic in your own back yard, set up the
garage to look like a barn, or transform your living room into a petting zoo filled with
plush farm animals. Here's how to make your Barnyard Bash extra horsey with crafts,
activities, menu ideas and more:
- Make your party farm folksy: To enhance the farm frenzy of this pony party idea,
think denim, overalls, pig tails or pony tails, straw hats, and down home fun. So
go ahead and "horse around" with red bandannas. Dress your guests like "farm
folk." You'll get that down on the farm look when you invite everyone to wear a
barnyard bandanna. Just greet your guests with a red bandanna as they enter
your party. Surprisingly, the local party supply stores don't stock enough red
bandannas, so you'll need to buy them in bulk, right.
Here are more ways to use a red bandanna for your party:
- Bandanna napkins. Bandannas make wonderful napkins for your party and
look sweet paired with red plates on a red checked table cloth.
- For an extra horsey effect, tie a small horse figurine using Jute
twine (natural colored craft string) for horse themed napkin rings.
- Slip a bandanna inside a wide mouthed mason jar to serve up the
utensils for a buffet. (Idea from a Soft place to Land.) Stealing this
idea, you can also line the bread basket.
- Bandanna favors. Wrap plastic horses and other horse themed favors for
your little farm folk into a red bandanna. Add a branch or stick for extra hill
billy appeal. Now that's a wrap!
- Bandanna bag lunches. If you have designs on the perfect barnyard favor,
then try the hobo stick idea with a bandanna for a portable lunch.
- Bandannas for Horse games. Use a red bandanna for your horse games. Tie
a bandanna on a pair of kids for a three legged horse race. Or use the red
bandanna as a blindfold for pin the pony tail on the horsey (or donkey)
game.
- More horsey Bandanna decoration ideas.
- Tie a red bandanna to plush horse toys, a stick horse, or the family dog!
- Wrap your barnyard invitation in a bandanna! (Don't try writing your
message on the bandanna, it won't work!)
- Make a bandanna ribbon to tie a favor bag. This cowboy favor bag is extra
horsey and equally ideal for a barnyard bash.
- A pony party at home on the range. Your horse themed party is complete when
you have a petting zoo and pony rides, however as pony parties go, you don't
have to invite a real horse or head to the ranch to have fun. So go ahead and
celebrate your child's birthday with barnyard theme right at home (or in the
garage). Instead, have a craft activity to do with horses, and horse around with
games.
- Toss around the idea of horse shoes. The rubber horse shoes, right, may not be
as heavy as the real thing but they offer hours of fun for the budding "pitcher"
and ideal for the 4-8 year old range. The shoes aren't too heavy for kids, yet
they have a nice weight to toss, so no one gets hurt.
- Make it the best party "Barn-none!" Create a red focal point with an iconic red
barn. Here are a few ways to enhance your red barn theme:
- Build a barn. Make a kid size red barn from an appliance box painting it red and
white using your toy as the model.
- Decorate with a Toy barn. You may already have a toy farm you can use for the
table decorations. If not, the red wooden barn, above right, is a wonderful toy
and affordable centerpiece for your party at around $30 with free shipping. It's
small enough to make a statement on the table and will surely be a cherished
keepsake of the party. Or make your own cardboard barn (idea from Family Fun).
Decorate your "barn" with mini horse figurines and mini hay bales.
- Set up a barn tent. The barnyard tent lower right, is ideal. But you can make your
own barn from cardboard.
- Turn your garage into a barn! Invite friends and family into your garage, which you
will transform into a barn stall with bales of hay and hay scattered on the floor.
It might be time to clear out the garage anyway. Add a scene setter, left, and
you're halfway there! Even if you don't want to hold the party in the garage, it's
a fun way to get your barnyard party started if you have them enter through
your "barn." Either way, the barn is a great location for a barn dance!
Barnyard Invitations and Thank you cards
Inviting guests to your barnyard bash is half the fun. The best store bought invitation
barn-none is the red barn invitation, left, which opens up to a horse. You can make a
similar invitation from red craft paper. Stencil a horse with cookie cutters or decorate
with horse stickers.
Here are wording suggestions if you decide to make your own pony party invitations:
- It's a barnyard bash!
- Barn dance: 123 Main Street
- RSVP: Farmer Annie at 867-5309 with a "Yeah" or "Neigh"
- With an oink and a moo our little birthday boy is turning two
- Or try hand delivering a horse figurine and tell guests to check e-mail for the
invitation specific. Here are some fun e-mail invitations.
- Thank you card
Barnyard Horse Decoration ideas
Down on the farm decor is easier than you think. If you're having a barnyard Horse
party, then we have some more decoration ideas that are sure to raise the roof:
- Create a stable environment with horse balloons! It's not a horse party without
some barnyard horses in your stable. Horse balloons are an essential for a
horse theme party and this decoration idea doubles as favors for the kids. Buy
horse shape balloons online and fill them with helium at your local party supply
or dollar store. You can "stable-ize" them for your party by using horse figurines
or mini hay bales as balloon weights.
- Hey, Hey, Hay! Quit horsing around with the decorations. Start with hay bales if
you can get them at the local feed supply. Just a few real bales of hay with red
checkered gingham tablecloth will supply the right down home atmosphere.
Scatter some hay for the wagon so you can have a hay ride. Another option is to
find mini hay bales, right. And prop them with your barnyard horse for a
centerpiece at the tables or at the buffet.
- Keep in check with red gingham. Keeping with a red theme, choose red checkered
table cloths, red plastic utensils and decorate the party area with mylar horse
balloons mixed with red and white latex balloons. Tie balloons to model horses
or barnyard toys. Find pretty red ribbons to affix to other horse figurines. Tie up
the favors in a red bandanna, place them in a bucket and have party goers bob
for "apples" (the favor bags) without water. And, of course, get out a red wagon
as a prop. Add hay to the decor if you can and let the adults or a teenager give
"hay rides" using the wagon.
Barnyard horse favors
- Party-goers will favor the Grow a Pony toy, which grows 600 percent in size.
About a buck at Michael's arts and crafts store (they retail for as much as $2.95
elsewhere). The clever writing on the packaging makes them ideal for invitations,
thank you cards, too.
- Have a barnyard egg hunt. Recycle leftover eggs from Easter and fill them with
horsey items. Mini Horse figurines are an obvious choice to stuff your eggs, but
you'll find stretchy horses and barnyard animals in our Barnyard party store.
Look also for horse stickers, horse finger puppets, horse tattoos, and horse
party sweets on eBay, and other online stores. The buttermints with a Horse on
the label, pictured left, were found at Birthday in a Box.
- Look also to eBay for find custom party favors. You'll find vendors who will
customize candy wrappers, scratch-off-game cards and more. Get cash back at
eBay for all your eBay purchases, and hundreds of other online stores, including
Oriental Trading Company.
Barnyard horse birthday cake
- Barnyard cupcake toppers, left.
- Make your own barnyard animal cookies, using the "NorPro 12 Cup Nonstick
Farm Cookie Pan." Madeleine cookies work well, or use this pan to make
chocolates too. Search Amazon for horse molds to make lollipops and chocolates.
- Horse and barnyard theme candy. Try these tasty treats for the party:
Barnyard horse games and Activities
Feed sacks are great for three-legged Horse races and fit nicely with the barnyard
Horse party theme. If you aren't close to a feed store to get a burlap sack, then head
to your local fabric store and ask for Burlap, or Hessian Cloth. If you're open to messy
fun activities, choose an egg relay spoon race, or have a treasure hunt by hiding prizes
in a few bales of hay. Here are more barnyard horse games and activities:
- Be sure to read "Barn Dance!" by John Archambault as an activity just after cake,
but before opening gifts.
- Pin-The-Tail-On-The-Donkey is an obvious party game, so surprise party goers
with a Pin-The-Tail-On-The-Horse game, which also doubles as decoration
because it has the birthday child's name imprinted. Or play a carnival game with
barnyard rubber ducks. Number the little duckies and have party goers take
turns to scoop ducks from the pool with a net. The corresponding numbers
receive a prize, like this rubber duck Horse soap found on Etsy.com for $6.00.
