Today's Horse Crazy Blog Topic: Kentucky Derby Parties and the
release of the Kentucky Derby Barbie Doll
(April 21, 2009)
Ah, the first Saturday of May is almost here: the 135th Kentucky Derby at
Churchill Downs is May 2, 2009. It's off to the races for many party
planners who haven't yet secured their Kentucky Derby party wares as
most of the party supplies are darned near impossible to find at the local
party supply (unless you live in Kentucky).*
Opening day starts April 25, 2009, and this year's "run for the roses" event
is sure to be exciting. Yeah, the horse race is pretty cool, but they are
promoting my dream car: a gorgeous 2009 Mercedes-Benz, model SL550
(talk about horse power)! The estimated price is $109,000. Nice! I would
love to be the winning Kentucky Derby Hi-5 ticket holder, but winning is a
bit complicated. It depends on the official order of finish of the 135th
running. To win the Kentucky Derby Hi-5, you must correctly select the first
five official finishers. Alas, I don't have a ticket or a clue about how to pick
the right horses.
Out here in California, we rely on the California Derby Review. How apropos
that Chocolate Candy was the heavy favorite with a "mouth watering move"
(he won by two lengths) as I adore chocolate. My love for horses stems
from my horse crazy kids. As luck would have it, we'll have a little Kentucky
Derby party this year as it pretty much coincides with my birthday ... and as
my husband says, "Mommy, gets a pony party too." Perhaps my hubby will
send me a bouquet of chocolate roses for my birthday this year. Yum!
Sometimes for my birthday, I request gifts that aren't for me. (They're for
the kids, really!) This year is no different as I've "requested" the Mattel
Kentucky Derby Barbie doll with the wide brimmed hat. Celebrities and
socialites with attention to fashion dawn the traditional over-sized hat at
this annual event. Barbie is a "celebrity" and as American as Kentucky Derby
Pie, and she is doing a fine job commemorating the 135th Kentucky Derby.
Even so, I wish she had something horsey about her besides that hat.
Perhaps instead of boring old pearls she could have worn a horse-shoe
necklace or at least held a "Kentucky Derby Program" in her hand. Would a
teeny tiny mint julep glass be appropriate? Probably not. But I wondered
where's the horse, and where's Ken for that matter.
After all it's the "KEN-tucky" Derby isn't it? Where's Miss Barbie's Jockey?
Okay, my little fashionistas will appreciate this Barbie doll, but I'm still
hoping for some candy roses to arrive on my birthday.
